FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 10 – October 23, 2010
Ratio 3, 1447 Stevenson Street, San Francisco, CA 94103 USA
Opening reception: September 10, 2010, 6-8pm.
Ratio 3 is pleased to present new work by Ruth Laskey, on view from September 10 to October 23, 2010.
For this exhibition, Ruth Laskey will present seven new weavings from her Twill Series. Her investigations into the definitive nature of the blank canvas have evolved into increasingly complex relationships between form, color, and space. She employs dye, thread, and a loom to weave intricate geometric forms that fade in and out of focus, and suggest subtle movement.
In this most recent body of work, the artist has shifted her attention from the structure of the weaving to the fluid properties of the dye. As a result, the images have morphed, the angular geometric forms have loosened, and the dyes have affected a blurring of color, shape and space. Gradations of color engage the object of the blank canvas with a rhythmic, fluctuating depth.
“All straight lines are really curved if you extend them far enough. And if you’ve been doing straight lines for a while, the next thing is to try curves. Where else is there to go but all the way around?”—Lee Lozano
In conjunction with the Laskey exhibition, the gallery will also present an exhibition of works by the late Lee Lozano (1930-1999), curated by Steven Leiber. On view will be four graphite drawings from the 1960s and a selection of original xerographic prints from her notebooks, 1967-70.
Ruth Laskey was born in 1975 in San Luis Obispo, CA. She graduated from the California College of the Arts with a B.F.A. in 1999 and an M.F.A. in 2005 with degrees in Painting/Drawing. She has had solo exhibitions at Galerie Cinzia Friedlaender, Berlin (2009), Song Song, Vienna (2008), and Ratio 3 (2008). She has been included in group exhibitions at Lehman College Art Gallery, New York (2010), Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College, Portland, OR (2010), The Approach, London (2008), Misako & Rosen, Tokyo (2008), and the Oakland Museum of California (2007). Laskey currently lives and works in San Francisco. This is her second solo exhibition with Ratio 3.
